Want to bring more music into your life with young children?  How about starting your own Family Music Time!

You don’t need to know play an instrument.  Just bring the family together and sing a few of the songs you love.  One of my friends keeps it really simple.  She, her husband, and her five year old son each choose a song, and they sing them in the space between dinner and bedtime.

It’s a simple ritual that can add so much warmth and life to your day.

To make it even more special, bring out some small percussion instruments for everyone to play.

Or, if your gathering is impromptu and outdoors, like mine was in this video, just watch your children improvise.  (Check out my son’s “instrument” in this video.  I think he’s banging a broom on a metal colander from our mud kitchen!

In this video, you’ll learn a great song to include in Family Music Time.  It’s simple and danceable for the whole family.

The lyrics might be hard to hear, so here they are:

Sandy Land

Make my living in Sandy land
Make my living in Sandy land
Make my living in Sandy land
Ladies, fare thee well

Raise big taters in Sandy land
Raise big taters in Sandy land
Raise big taters in Sandy land
If you can’t dig ‘em, then I guess I can

Hop come along my pretty little miss
Hop come along my honey
Hop come along my pretty little miss
I won’t be home til sunday.

This song gives a taste of what’s coming in our Meadowlark Music Class summer session, which starts June 14th at Natural Resources, June 28th at Neighborhood Playgarden, and June 30th outdoors at the SF Botanical Garden.

Happy music making!
